Damien Cox: The Maple Leafs’ signing of Tyler Bertuzzi is a marriage of convenience. But those are all the rage these days
This is another of those bet-on-himself scenarios that we’re seeing these days as salary-cap dollars remain scarce with many NHL clubs. The cap is expected to rise next year, maybe beyond $90 million, and clearly Bertuzzi is hoping a longer-term, big-money contract will be out there for him next summer.
That left Bertuzzi looking elsewhere, and the Leafs suddenly became the perfect fit. After signing enforcer Ryan Reaves and offensive defenceman John Klingberg on Saturday, the addition of Bertuzzi, equal parts pest and scorer, leaves Leafs Nation still a little unclear where new GM Brad Treliving is taking the club.
More than anything, Bertuzzi seems to be the latest in a long string of players who see the exposure available to them in Toronto as a good stepping stone to a better payday elsewhere. Like Bunting, Bertuzzi loves to draw penalties and talk trash on the ice. He has scored 20 goals three times in his career, and 30 goals once. Staying healthy has been a problem, which might explain why a long-term free-agent deal wasn’t out there. He’s never played a full NHL season, and was held to 50 games last season, 29 with Detroit and 21 with Boston.
