Gregor Chisholm: The Jays are in the best possible hands with Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk behind the plate

For a lot of players in Jansen’s position there would have been a sense of relief after that deal was completed, but not the 27-year-old from Illinois. There was someone else taking up the bulk of his spare time.

“I try to live by: control what I can control. I was more anxious about being a new dad, you know what I mean? I just try to keep my head down, keep out of it and better myself, better my body and get myself ready.” Much of Jansen’s new-found success with the bat has been credited to the sixth-year catcher finding the right balance in his pre-game preparation. Earlier in his career, he spent so much time trying to improve his defence and game calling that it hurt his hitting.

“My biggest fear is not being prepared,” Jansen said. “Sometimes I could be doing a little bit extra, but at least I know that I’m preparing my mind and my body. Whether it’s extra catching work, doing some hitting stuff, live at-bats. Giving myself more time for offence rather than just defence. It’s longer days, but I’m just making sure that I’m prepared.”
