Opinion: Stop making street 'camping' a viable option for homeless people [Opinion]
It’s broadly discussed by residents Downtown that people from churches or similar organizations are bringing tents to the homeless Downtown, and that should stop. I’m sure they mean well, but they are making the problem worse.
The residents of San Diego who are unsheltered need just that — shelter, even if this “shelter” is an organized tent city like the one that was briefly provided near the train yard, with access to restrooms and other facilities/services. Just think, if the majority of churches and similar religious and civic organizations in San Diego County would take in one or two individuals there would be significantly fewer folks living on sidewalks.
Sponsorship could include providing shelter at the church/organization property but most importantly access to needed social services, food and bathrooms. Downtown San Diego can’t continue to be a dumping ground for the severely mentally ill and those with significant substance abuse issues.
