Seven Musings: Could Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews team up with Connor McDavid? All options on table ahead of contract talks
said the star centre. “I think I’ve reciprocated that before, how much I enjoyed playing here and, and what it means to me the organization, my teammates and how much I just enjoy being here.”“It’ll all kind of work itself out in due time,” said Matthews.
So the thinking is Matthews will be offered between $13 million and $14 million over a long-term deal. But what if he wants the max, but only over one or two years, similar to the short-term deals in the NBA. That means his salary would rise every couple of years, with the cap, the way NBA stars do it. He risks a career-altering injury of course.
Let’s go further. What’s to stop Matthews from trying to form a super team? Bide his time on a one-year deal and wait for Marner so the two can go together . Send smoke signals to the team they want,. Or sign a two-year deal and see if he and Jack Eichel can join forces in 2025-26. Or sign a three-year deal and see if he and McDavid could land in the same spot in 2026-27.
