Re “Retired deputy offers jail/drugs perspective” (Sept. 10): I read with amusement the letter by retired sheriff’s deputy Al Bates.
: I read with amusement the letter by retired sheriff’s deputy Al Bates. He strongly insinuated that defense attorneys smuggle drugs into the local jails to give to their clients. As a local defense attorney, I urge Mr. Bates to give even one example of a defense attorney being caught smuggling drugs into a San Diego County jail. He will not be able to.
However, in February, a sheriff’s deputy was allegedly caught bringing cocaine onto jail property. That deputy’s criminal case is still pending. I am not accusing that particular deputy or any other deputy of smuggling drugs into jails to give to inmates. My point is that Mr. Bates’s baseless accusation against the defense bar as a whole is just plain wrong.
