OPINION: Renewing social contract between Canadians and armed forces this Canada Day CanadaDay cdnpoli

These issues exist globally, however, to many Canadians they have been revelatory and disappointing. And while service members carry this feeling with them every day, it typically only hits the radar for Canadians periodically.

This is not only to ensure service members understand their impact is appreciated but also to support viable and fruitful recruitment efforts. Our national security genuinely depends on this as the CAF struggles to maintain the base of what we need to populate our most critical operations.

Canadians need to know more about what our military does, but we are hamstrung instead of having a productive National dialogue. I believe Canadians inherently do appreciate and value the CAF, however, messaging fatigue may have resulted in a degree of ambivalence. Canadians would benefit from a better overview of all the CAF does for us and a reminder that we became the Nation we are today because of their service.

We are living in a time of advanced and asymmetric conflict globally and our service community is what allows us to sleep at night whether we perceive this fully or not. I wish all Canadians could have the experience of standing watch in the waters 70 km due south of Nova Scotia – aboard a Navy ship that can pick up on any activity within ample critical alert or reaction timing.
