Opinion: The college-admission scandal is a study in the high costs of destroying standards on behalf of good intentions, writes DanHenninger

The fantastic college-admissions scandal calls to mind one of the most famous sayings in American life: “We have met the enemy and he is us.” Its wise author, the great cartoonist Walt Kelly would have gotten a kick out of explanations for the alleged fraud, which have become an exercise in turning away from the mirror and blaming someone or something else.

Most prominently, there is the explanation on the political left, that the scandal signifies, yet again, the country’s disparities of wealth, privilege...The Department of Justice calls it the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted. It involved bribes, doctored exam scores and faked athletic achievements. So who's at fault—parents, colleges or the system? Photo: EPA
