NHL playoffs could impact Auston Matthews’ long-term future with Maple Leafs. Matthews can start working on an extension on July 1. It begs the question: Are the Leafs’ playoff success and a long-term contract intertwined? Opinion by RealKyper
Both players said everything right as they played out the final year of their contract, only to leave Calgary and Long Island fans heartbroken. Were they truly undecided? Or did they know they were bound to leave and said whatever was necessary to blow off the scent?
Could Matthews play out his final year in similar fashion, or did all that change last July when Tkachuk decided to rip the Band-Aid off and forgo his final season in Calgary by laying his cards on the table early? Unlike many of his UFA predecessors, Tkachuk gave Calgary the opportunity to trade him for assets rather than watch him walk out the door for nothing. Despite an extremely disappointed fan base, it was seen as a noble act on his part. He gave GM Brad Treliving a chance to acquire significant pieces in an attempt to fill the huge hole that Tkachuk left.
I do see the Leafs having success against Tampa Bay this time around. And I think that if Matthews is not convinced to sign long-term, there’s a world where he signs a short-term deal — perhaps waiting for the NHL’s salary cap to go up — and we’ll revisit this again in three or four years. Matthews has been tight-lipped, so it’s hard to predict how things will go. What is certain is that it will be difficult for him to get past July 1 without a definitive answer on his intentions. TheMatthews is already considered one of the greatest players to ever wear the blue and white. Starting Tuesday, this stretch of hockey could decide if he wants to sit on top of that mountain forever.
