Opinion: Native Americans like me pass down our own stories and special dishes on Thanksgiving [Opinion]

is a student at Palomar College majoring in digital broadcasting arts, a host on KKSM Palomar College Radio, and a proud member of the Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel, where he lives.

What my family does now is a bit different. While we celebrate the holiday, it is not in the traditional sense. For centuries, stories have been told of how our world was changed when the pilgrims came, and not for the better. Many of us were told it was in fact a Caucasian holiday and that we don’t celebrate the atrocities that cut against the intent of such a day. It is still a very controversial and touchy subject.

These plates may consist of both modern and traditional dishes. While not originally eaten by Natives — who preferred chicken because it was more accessible at the time — turkey is now cooked by the host. Along with the more common dishes such as yams and green bean casserole, Natives also bring their own dishes special for the occasion. Growing up, I was told stories by my aunt that instead of turkey and mashed potatoes, her meals had chicken and deer meat.

These dishes are always something to look forward to, but it isn’t the food that makes the day special. It is the people you spend it with.
