Fred DeLorey: National Security and Intelligence committee should investigate potential threats to our democracy. via torontostar

As a political operative, I have seen my fair share of controversies and scandals in the world of politics. But the recent revelations coming out of CSIS about election interference are particularly alarming.

If people lose faith in the fairness of our elections, they will lose faith in the legitimacy of our government as well. I have watched with interest the growing calls for a public inquiry and while I understand the concerns behind these calls, I must say that I have serious reservations about the effectiveness of such an inquiry.

Additionally, public inquiries can be highly politicized and become more focused on scoring points and blaming individuals or political parties, rather than finding solutions. This committee could be given a clear mandate to meet with security officials, political campaigns, and other relevant stakeholders to identify the legislative gaps that currently exist in our laws and recommend the necessary steps to fill those gaps. By doing so, we can ensure that those who attempt to interfere in our democracy are caught and appropriately punished.A public inquiry is not the best way to address the issue of election interference. No meaningful solutions will come from it.
