Let’s keep dissecting Sheldon Keefe’s latest lineup tinkerings, and wondering what’s wrong with Morgan Rielly, and hemming and hawing over who, precisely, ought to beBut when Toronto’s first-round series with thebegins around this time next month, just know there’s a possibility that very little of that regular-season hand-wringing will be relevant.

Still, if you’re betting on history to repeat, let’s not forget that one of the safest bets in pro sports is to fade an NHL team in the year following a run to the Stanley Cup final. It just so happens the Lightning, the back-to-back champions in 2020 and 2021, are coming off a third straight trip to the championship series a season ago.

The Lightning, of course, have done an incredible job of mostly refusing to entertain those sorts of conversations. Which isn’t surprising. It’s beyond difficult to maintain a title-worthy standard for multiple seasons. Look at the post-Cup struggles of Toronto’s Wednesday night opponent, the Colorado Avalanche. In attempting to follow up last year’s banner-raising performance, the injury-ravaged Avalanche have acknowledged one of the biggest challenges has been attempting to rekindle the collective relentlessness that made them champions in the first place.
