Mike Wilner: Lost weekend buries Jays in AL East basement with Rays on deck. Pathetic clutch hitting isn’t the only problem
Saturday, Jays manager John Schneider ended his post-game press conference by accidentally jostling a wire as he stood up, knocking his microphone to the floor. “That’s where we’re at right now,” he said, summarizing a week in which they’d lost five of six, andbecause, when he went out to talk to the big righty in the sixth, he’d forgotten that pitching coach Pete Walker had already visited the mound that inning.
Oh, and the Jays went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position on Saturday, after going 1-for-17 on Wednesday against the Yankees — although that one hit was Jansen’s walk-off three-run homer. In Sunday’s finale, the Jays managed eight hits over the first four innings — two with runners in scoring position — but the only run they scored was on aFirst and second with one out in the second, which became bases loaded with two out — nothing.
A one-out double in the third couldn’t score, nor could the Jays cash a first-and-third, one-out chance in the fourth. After no Jays reached base in the fifth, they loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and, once again, came up empty.
