Chantal Hébert: Liberals are lining up behind Justin Trudeau as he takes aim at Pierre Poilievre

MONTREAL — Had former Quebec premier Jean Charest beat Pierre Poilievre for the leadership of the federal Conservative party last summer, chances are Justin Trudeau would have delivered a farewell speech at the opening of his party’s convention on Thursday night.

Where Poilievre is clearly putting fire in the belly of the prime minister, a more middle-of-the-road Conservative leader like Charest would have acted as a wet blanket. There’s no doubt the latest Conservative leader poses an existential threat not just to the Liberal party’s place in government but also to Trudeau’s legacy in ways that Charest or even Erin O’Toole would not have.

John Turner lived under the shadow of Jean Chrétien’s frustrated leadership ambitions. The latter endured the same treatment at the hands of the Paul Martin clan. And many Liberals spent Stéphane Dion’s brief tenure convinced that the grass would be greener under Michael Ignatieff’s leadership.
