We can wear our “World Series Champions” garb with our head held high this time.
,” : I applaud your editorial expounding on the diversity of Houston as reflected by the Astros players. I would add that Dusty Baker did not have an easy time getting into or playing in the majors. Yet, here is an African American role model for everyone to follow. He is a brilliant strategist and a compassionate human.
I’ve known Dusty for almost 40 years, and while baseball is a component of our friendship, it is only a small part of what we share. In fall 1985, I was organizing Baseball for Peace, a 10-day goodwill tour of Nicaragua for players, fans and writers, based on our two countries’ common national pastime. Dusty called me and asked how he could help. He donated some equipment and sponsored my then-15-year-old son, a talented high school ballplayer.
One of the most endearing things about Dusty is that he treats everyone the same. It doesn’t matter if you’re the King of Siam or somebody he’s never met before — he is genuinely curious about you and interested in what you have to offer.Over the years he has never failed to be there when it counted. He came with me to visit my friend who was terminally ill with lung cancer. He left tickets and clubhouse passes for another friend whose wife had just died.
So now it’s almost a certainty that Dusty Baker will be the first African American manager inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. But when he gets his plaque, it will only be a secondary honor. My long-time friend and confidant is already a long-standing member of the Mensch Hall of Fame.
