I’ve experienced a similar moment.years old as she reached out to touch my hair. Knowing I was a physician, I’d been asked to take a look at her when she fell and hit her head in the church foyer.

“Yes, I am,” I replied, deeply affected by the realization that this Black child had clearly never been seen by a Black doctorI finished examining her, she was okay. Before I walked away, I looked straight into her still-wide brown eyes and said, “You can be a doctor too if you want to be. All you have to do is believe in yourself, work really hard at school and if you want to, you can be one.”

It was an immense oversimplification of the journey to become a doctor. Yet, I had to let this Black child growing up in a city where not just most people, but most doctors, were white, know that she could be me when she grew up. It was important for her to not just see me, but to hear me say it. More recently, a new patient sitting in front of me in clinic started to cry happy tears. For the first time in many years, they told me, their doctor was Black like them. This reflects the problematic
