Mike Wilner: Jays’ top prospect Ricky Tiedemann perfectly poised in his first spring appearance
’ top prospect made his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday afternoon and lived up to the hype that has been surrounding the 20-year-old left-hander since his breakout last year across three levels of the minor leagues.
Tiedemann was able to draw on his previous experience at TD Ballpark, where he made his professional debut just over 11 months ago, throwing five innings of three-hit ball for the Dunedin Blue Jays. It went well. With the count 1-2 on Baez, Tiedemann fired a 99.4-m.p.h. fastball — the hardest pitch he has thrown in a game — and got Baez to swing through it just above the top of the strike zone.
“It’s conversations that we have with him,” said Schneider, “whether it’s in the office or the dugout, where you kind of nod and go. ‘OK, he’s got a really good idea of what he’s doing and he’s got the stuff to back it up.’ ” “I was able to introduce myself right when I got into camp,” he said, “so I know a lot of the guys on a first-name basis now, but I’m still looking to talk to them a little bit more as spring training goes by.
