This weekend’s leaders’ summit in Delhi throws the challenges faced by the annual gathering into stark relief – but a new direction can give it new life
India has also used its G20 year to take the stage as a champion for developing countries, promoting issues such as digital public infrastructure and climate finance – both key ingredients for equity and sustainability in international development. But given the dynamics, it would be unwise to expect much progress to emerge from theitself. If a leaders’ declaration is issued at all, it won’t be substantive.
And there are more challenges immediately ahead. In 2024 and 2025, the G20 presidency will rotate to Brazil and then South Africa, two countries that have made reforming the global system a primary ambition. But to go beyond empty rhetoric, those countries will need to ensure buy-in from the most advanced economies on a common vision for meaningful co-operation on key global issues. A G20 with a renewed direction has a role in achieving this.
