The organizers showed us how to march, how to link arms. If you were the “linchpin,” the center person, they showed you how you could hold on to your belt so that the others could hold on to you. And they showed us how to protect ourselves. If you were beaten, how to fold up into a ball and to cover yourself. Most of all, they told us to be nonviolent, not strike back, even if spit upon or beaten.
I was a linchpin in the first line. I was a tall, skinny kid. We were singing, “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around,” a song common in those marches. Pretty soon we found ourselves almost face to face with the state troopers. That’s when the commissioner gave the order, “Let the dogs loose!”
