Opinion: Honors class cuts put Patrick Henry High School students at a disadvantage [Opinion]

” : As a grandparent of students graduated from Patrick Henry High, in the top 5 percent, I recently noted almost 2,000 universities have stopped requiring SAT/ACT scores. Weighted GPAs are now critical to admissions and parents’ concerns are justified.

School board trustee Richard Barrera is clearly gas-lighting families because in removing the honors classes, the curriculum is watered down, standards are lowered and there is less of an opportunity for students to earn higher GPAs and be competitive with other high schools in California and the nation.

If Principal Irwin is concerned about minority representation in honors classes, she should address both implicit/explicit bias in counseling, which assigns students classes and provide enhanced tutoring programs for those who need or want them. This action drags Henry down in nationwide standing, further making it harder for all students to be competitive. Until this is fixed, I would move my student to a charter where honors, etc., are more valued.

” : Thank you for your recent coverage of our public schools. I see a link between the article reporting that public school enrollment is at a two-decade low and the other article reporting parents are upset at Henry High for removing honors courses.I also read the article about San Diego Unified’s new superintendent and his salary of $375,000, which is a 29 percent increase from the salary of the previous superintendent.

I hope our new superintendent is for turning around this enrollment drop. I also hope that he is for offering more advanced classes and not less. Otherwise, I am not sure he was the right choice to head our schools and definitely not at this price.
