Elizabeth Conley, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographerERCOT again asks Texans to conserve power after numerous generators fail amid strong energy demand

,” : In another state, for hot summer days we had “energy savings days” where customers were asked to reduce their electrical consumption. However, the difference there was there was a financial incentive for the customer. I would frequently earn $20 a day in credits during the performance period for using less energy during peak demand.

Why can’t Texas have a smart grid? Manual adjustments or price adjustments being the only way to manage demands makes no sense. I lived in East Coast states for 20 years, where 4-degree temperatures in winter time were a regular occurrence. I have had a power outage occur in every state I’ve lived in. However, I never experienced a power outage due solely to cold temperatures except in Texas. There is no reason an electrical grid can’t function in cold weather. It’s quite a stark contrast that the “Energy Capital of the World” can’t keep its own lights on.
