Opinion: Democrats about to lose control of Capitol, dimming hope for overdue immigration fixes [Opinion]
Yet what’s odd is that the same president who has warmed up to Title 42 also initially embraced much less strict border policies that have led to record number of individuals crossing into the U.S. The border surge continues atthe levels seen under Trump. But some migrants, as George Orwell might have noted, are less equal than others. Official figures show those from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador — nations with solid diplomatic relations with the U.S.
Yes, on some immigration issues — starting with his far more humane treatment of asylum-seeking minors — this president is vastly better than the last one. But there is more rhetoric than substance. Where is the comprehensive, thoughtful approach to reforming U.S. immigration that’s so badly needed? To finally opening a clear path to citizenship for the
undocumented immigrants who are a key part of the workforce? To push to end the unconscionable delays in getting asylum hearingsin allowing law-abiding drivers to legally cross the border? To make the current system much less cruel to the many people who want to enter this nation legally, then make it their home and make it a better place?
Two years ago, these goals were publicly embraced by Biden. Now it’s hard to find firm evidence he is using his clout to pursue any of them. In coming days, if Democrats don’t try to save DACA or expand work visas in their final lap before Republicans take over the House, they will do so knowing this: Joe Biden doesn’t mind. His actions — and inactions — speak louder than his words.
