Jason Logan: Connor Bedard. Victor Wembanyama. In golf, Rose Zhang is the next one
Like Woods and Wie, she is a product of Stanford University. But unlike them, Zhang came away from her maiden professional event with the first-place cheque. She did that three weeks ago at the Mizuho Americas Open, in a playoff over Jennifer Kupcho — who, like Zhang, can count herself among the few winners of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Zhang won that tournament in April and then defended her NCAA individual title in early June. That was her 12th collegiate victory in just 20 starts.
That’s not as good as Woods winning by a dozen shots at Augusta National in his first major as a pro, but give the kid a break because it was only Zhang’s second start since leaving college golf. She’ll play a fairly full summer schedule, including the CPKC Women’s Open at Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in August.
“I would say I’m content with the result; I’m not content with how I played,” said Zhang after the Women’s PGA, a statement that might alarm her peers. There is no such thing as guaranteed greatness, and plenty of players have fallen victim to the trials and tribulations of their chosen sport. But as the eras of Bedard and Wembanyama near, it’s worth noting that golf may already have its next generational talent.
