Opinion: China is just one foreign government trying to influence Canadian elections. The foreign government most likely to influence Canadian elections is the one based in Washington.

When it comes to sneakiness, no one can hold a candle to China — or least that’s what we are told to believe.

Yet when China presented such a plan this week, the West sniggered. NATO noted only that the Chinese plan did not require Russia to pull its troops immediately from Ukraine. It also noted that China saw two sides to the story, including one where Russia was threatened by a Ukraine that was tied tightly into NATO.

In Canada today, China is viewed as a modern version of that peril. In particular, China is seen as the author of a nefarious scheme to steal elections. I would look closer to home. The foreign government most likely to influence Canadian elections is the one based in Washington. Let’s take hard look at Americans who are trying to influence Canadian elections.
