Gregor Chisholm: Blue Jays swing for the fences by drafting high-upside high school shortstop
The Jays selected 17-year-old Arjun Nimmala with the 20th pick. The Florida native reportedly possesses raw power to all fields and should only get stronger as he grows into his six-foot-one, 170-pound frame. But, with Nimmala being one of the youngest players in the draft, patience will be required. The Jays are confident he will be worth the wait.
Those reports were either inaccurate or the Jays were forced to pivot after there was a run on college players during the middle portion of the first round. All but one of the nine picks before the Jays’ selection were NCAA players. Nimmala has taken a unique journey to professional baseball. He was born in Florida, but his parents are from India and moved to the United States in the early 2000s. His father was an avid cricket fan who began searching for similar experiences in North America before he was exposed to baseball.
Nimmala has a commitment to attend Florida State University in the fall but the Jays don’t seem overly concerned about their ability to sign him. Farrell said Nimmala, who lives about an hour away from the Jays’ minor-league complex in Dunedin, Fla., has already visited the club’s facility and had several meetings with members from the organization.
