Opinion: If Toronto’s next mayor wants to address the mental health and addictions crisis, they need to start by addressing housing.
No one will argue that we are in the midst of an alarming homelessness, mental health and addictions crisis in Toronto. What we are lacking is clear leadership and direction on how to address this complex crisis.I know that without a major influx of new supportive housing units, this crisis will never end.
That is why investing in housing that is affordable and provides wraparound supports for the most vulnerable in our city has got to be the number one issue for Toronto’s next mayor. The economy and mental health and addiction are not mutually exclusive subjects. Evidence shows that building and providing supportive housing leads to individual benefits, economic spinoff and, most notably, cost savings for the taxpayer.
