The organization opens its new season with 'The Elixir of Love' at Lambert Hall on Dec. 3.
Opera In the Heights’ 2022-23 season will begin Dec. 3 in a familiar place: Lambert Hall, its home since 1996. That was hardly a foregone conclusion just a few months back, but the property has since been acquired by Houston Saengerbund, the city's oldest musical association, chartered in 1883. That's a huge relief to artistic and interim general director Eiki Isomura.
The vibe at Lambert Hall, originally built in 1927, would have been nearly impossible to duplicate at any other local venue, Isomura says. Luckily, Opera In the Heights’ new landlords not only wanted the company to stay, but has positioned them to anchor the nascent performance campus known as the Houston Center for Musical Arts.: Lambert Hall, 1703 Heights Blvd.“I think Lambert Hall is a very much-needed space for small to medium-sized music groups,” Isomura says.
Saengerbund’s stewardship of Lambert Hall allows that ecosystem to remain intact. Isomura sees Opera In the Heights’ prominent role in the new HCMA as the byproduct of years of “making a compelling product for our community,” he says. Now they’re ready. The season opens Dec. 3-11 with Donizetti’s buoyant romance “The Elixir of Love,” a production Isomura picked up from Pacific Opera Project in Los Angeles. Here, the 19th-century Italian setting has been replaced with a ‘50s tableau inspired by “Grease” and “Happy Days,” while the choreography is based around dance crazes of the era such as the Twist.
