Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy has requested an urgent meeting with Ottawa, and asked for a ‘rigorous analysis’ of Alberta’s plans
The Ontario government is asking Ottawa for an urgent meeting of finance ministers to discuss Alberta’s proposal to withdraw from the Canada Pension Plan, saying the idea could cause “serious harm” for retirees across Canada.
In the letter to Ms. Freeland, who is also the federal Finance Minister, Mr. Bethlenfalvy says that while Ontario has “the greatest respect” for Alberta, “our government firmly supports the CPP and shares your serious concerns with Alberta’s proposal to withdraw from it.” Mr. Bethlenfalvy said if any jurisdiction chooses to leave the plan, “it must be divided fairly, acknowledging the contributions made by workers in each participating province and territory. To that end, we would also welcome a rigorous analysis of the assumptions that Alberta’s proposal is based on.”
