John Malcom, former CEO of the Cape Breton District Health Authority, said clearly governments need to do better in providing access to services right across the country.“These clinics tend to be 9-5 Monday to Friday," he said. “If you run a hospital, as I did, you have to cover it 24 hours a day. … No one likes shift work. Even if the salary is the same, they are offering a real benefit that’s great for the employee.
Dr. Margaret Fraser said anything that potentially could pave the way for abandoning the Canadian public health system is not a good idea.“I think private, for-profit health care is an abomination that is not allowed under the Canada Health Act. I’m not entirely sure how these private facilities have been allowed to proliferate.”
“It’s an idea people are very nervous about and rightly so,” said NDP Leader Claudia Chender, who was travelling to Cape Berton this week.
