Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie was voted to become the next Ontario Liberal Party leader on the third ballot at the Ontario Liberal Party Leadership Convention, Saturday Dec 2, 2023 at the Metro Convention Centre. She then spoke to reporters.
Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie says if her party is successful in the next provincial election, she will not introduce a carbon tax. Premier Doug Ford's Progressive Conservatives have been spending a lot of time and money to tie her to the federal carbon price.
It's a position that comes after the Tories have for months tied Crombie to the federal carbon price, trying to define her in the public eye in her first few months as the new Liberal leader. "We will ensure major polluters pay, but we will not have an Ontario carbon tax on consumers," Crombie wrote in a statement.
Crombie's statement did not address whether she supports the carbon pricing system set up by the federal Liberal government. Ford and other premiers have called on the federal government to cancel or pause the annual increase next month.
