Justice of the Peace Margot McLeod denies she told a mentor she made a ruling while “high” on medication; “What it is, is a misunderstanding between colleagues,” her lawyer said.

Did an Ontario justice of the peace admit to being “high” on medication when ruling on whether an accused person should be granted bail? Those questions are at the heart of the discipline hearing of Justice of the Peace Margot McLeod, playing out in a downtown Toronto boardroom this week.

Bryant testified that McLeod said at the beginning of a virtual mentoring session that she had been “high” when she delivered a bail decision a few weeks earlier in Hamilton court. She already knew that McLeod had been on medication for an injured back, something McLeod told her at a previous mentoring session a few weeks earlier, when McLeod appeared to be in “discomfort.”

McLeod testified that she never said she delivered a decision while high. She said she probably used the word when talking to Bryant about the effects of the medication when she first started taking the pills and was at home off work. She said it was Bryant who asked her “out of left field” if she had delivered a decision while high, after McLeod told Bryant someone had requested a transcript of one of her rulings.
