Students will soon be able to leave school in Grade 11 to train for a career in the skilled trades — but they won’t miss out on getting their high school diploma under a new program the premier is touting as a “game changer.”

The province has an acute shortage of workers, and by 2026 one in five jobs will be in the skilled trades, Ford noted. Some 72,000 workers will be needed in the next four years in construction alone. The move will also help improve the high school graduation rate — which currently sits at 89 per cent.
