The provincial government is facing a class-action lawsuit seeking $200 million in damages for the early termination of a basic income pilot project in three cities across Ontario . The lawsuit was certified by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on March 4, 2022. The pilot project , launched in 2017, aimed to determine the feasibility of introducing a fixed income for low-income earners.
However, the government abruptly terminated the pilot a year later, claiming it didn't contribute to the economy. The class argues that the termination was motivated by unjust enrichment. The cancellation of the pilot had devastating effects on the applicants
