Thinking about their life today, 78 per cent of Canadians say they are either “very” or “somewhat happy.” There is regional variation, from a low of 71 per cent in British Columbia to a high of 90 per cent in Atlantic Canada. In the middle are Albertans , those in Saskatchewan and Manitoba , Ontario and Quebec
Curiously, when tracked against household income, happiness seems to rise from poverty toward wealth, but there is a peak at 90 per cent of people in the $125,000 to $150,000 range, after which it declines. Politically, the least happy Canadians seem to be People’s Party of Canada voters at 59 per cent, which stands to reason for a grievance movement, but mainstream parties like the Liberals and Conservatives are neck-and-neck at about 81 per cent. The happiest Canadians at 92 per cent are Bloc Québécois voters, which is at least a little ironic.
Optimism seemed to outweigh pessimism on many questions. More than one person in three said they think next year will be better than this year compared to 22 per cent who gave the pessimistic answer that next year will be worse. Forty per cent expect it to be about the same, all things considered.
