Barely one of four Canadians believe Daniel Johnston is a credible and impartial special rapporteur on foreign interference, suggests a new poll.

A significant majority of Canadians said they are concerned about China’s meddling in electoral affairs, but 47 per cent said the Trudeau government has handled the issue either poorly or very poorly, the poll shows.

But poll respondents are also skeptical of that. Survey results suggest 50 per cent of Canadians don’t think the Johnston report will “change anything” in the way the government handles foreign interference for the next federal election.Article content Enns said Canadians’ low trust in Johnston’s credibility and key report recommendation means the Trudeau Liberals will need to seriously consider how to deal with pressure over Johnston.

The Liberals voted against the motion, with some cabinet members, such as Justice Minister David Lametti, calling the criticism of Johnston “disgusting.”Article content“I deeply respect the right of the House of Commons to express its opinion about my work going forward, but my mandate comes from the government. I have a duty to pursue that work until my mandate is completed,” Johnston said in a statement.
