Bell says it has equipped 78 per cent of its larger cell towers in P.E.I. with fixed generators, which could help avoid prolonged mobility outages in a future storm. - Stu Neatby/SaltWireHeading to Principal’s Office for a Pint: Windsor’s Schoolhouse Brewery | SaltWireCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The biggest three cell carriers servicing P.E.I. say they have learned their lessons from last fall’s post-tropical storm Fiona.
Most towers were equipped with backup batteries, but these quickly lost power and had to be refuelled by technicians working with a limited supply of portable generators. Hatfield said smaller cell towers are not equipped with fixed generators but can be recharged with portable generators. One year after the storm, it is still difficult to tell the impact Fiona-related outages had on the networks of the three telecoms.
By Sept. 29, Rogers reported that “fuel issues have been resolved” although SaltWire continued to report mobility customers continued to experience dropped calls and connectivity issues.
