Most towers were equipped with backup batteries, but these quickly lost power and had to be refuelled by technicians working with a limited supply of portable generators. Hatfield said smaller cell towers are not equipped with fixed generators but can be recharged with portable generators. One year after the storm, it is still difficult to tell the impact Fiona-related outages had on the networks of the three telecoms.

By Sept. 29, Rogers reported that “fuel issues have been resolved” although SaltWire continued to report mobility customers continued to experience dropped calls and connectivity issues.
