In Ted Lasso’s sixth episode, Rebecca Welton finds herself in Amsterdam with a handsome Dutch stranger. “I think she is the most zen and relaxed she’s ever been,” Hannah Waddingham tells VF.
It’s also a twist on the familiar do-si-do that is the morning after a first tryst. Rebecca’s the one who woke up in someone else’s house. The actress says she didn’t think about whether Rebecca had had a one-night stand before. Instead, “I thought about the woman that was trapped in a loveless, certainly on his part, marriage.” Rebecca opts not to stay for breakfast. to set up the particulars of the kiss, and Lipsey says he chose to shoot the embrace from “slightly under the eyeline” as opposed to getting too close. Waddingham says she spoke with Sudeikis about who would initiate the kiss because Matthijs “had been so gentlemanly—I feel like it would be her that just has to see and feel.” This is also why she says improvised Rebecca playfully hitting him with her scarf afterward in a move she says suggests, “Goddammit. You got me there.
Rebecca’s voice cracks a bit when she tells Matthijs that she’ll never forget him, a delivery Lipsey credits to Sudeikis, whom he says told her to “go for melodrama—give it the big one.”“Companionship and being soulmates come in various different forms,” she says. “And I don’t think that they needed to have sex on the barge.
