Yet executives in the Lone Star State seem more positive about the economic outlook over the next year than those from other states.
Texas executives seem more hopeful about the future of the economy than those in other states, including California and Florida. A number of companies have moved their headquarters or expanded their presence in Texas over the past year, partly due to its friendly business environment.Texas business executives are more optimistic about the nation’s economic outlook than their peers in other states, even though more than a quarter of them have started or are considering layoffs.
According to the Texas businesses that responded, 8% have already laid off employees and are considering additional layoffs, 8% are in the process of laying off employees and 12% are considering layoffs. The other 73% aren’t considering layoffs over the next six months, higher than the 59% average among the states.
Adam Gersting, West Monroe’s Dallas office lead, said companies need to be thoughtful about how they go about layoffs. “I actually view this as a good thing,” Gersting said. “It’s an indication that businesses continue coming to and expanding in Texas, which creates a demand for more and higher caliber team members to be hired.”
“It ties into what we’re seeing with more and more companies coming to Texas, given the favorable business environment, its geographical location and the political climate,” he said.

The author has found that although there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to one-on-ones, they are most successful when the meeting is dominated by topics of importance to the direct report rather than issues that are top of mind for the manager. Managers should focus on making sure the meetings take place, creating space for genuine conversation, asking good questions, offering support, and helping team members get what they need to thrive in both their short-term performance and their long-term growth.
