Iran's interior minister says security forces will act to restore calm if protesters 'damaged public properties,' after a civilian was killed in petrol protests
Officials say a civilian was killed in central city of Sirjan but it was unclear if he had been"shot or not." Tehran introduced gasoline rationing and price hikes of at least 50 percent sparking worries over rising inflation.
The death occurred on Friday in the central city of Sirjan, where protesters had tried to set a fuel depot ablaze but were thwarted by security forces, semi-official ISNA news agency reported. "Security forces did not have permission to shoot and were only allowed to fire warning shots... which they did," ISNA quoted him as saying.
"Security forces have so far shown restraint and have tolerated the protests. But as the calm and security of people is our priority, they will fulfil their duty to restore calm if attacks on public and individuals' properties continue," the minister said.Protests were also held on Friday in other cities including Abadan, Ahvaz, Bandar Abbas, Birjand, Gachsaran, Khoramshahr, Mahshahr, Mashhad and Shiraz, said state news agency IRNA.
