NASA’s third attempt at loading propellant into its mega moon rocket was halted Thursday afternoon when technicians discovered a leak.

This was the agency’s third attempt at completing a wet dress rehearsal, the last major milestone before NASA can launch the Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule on an uncrewed mission around the moon. NASA’s team was supposed to practice countdown procedures, load the rocket with super cold liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen , and validate critical models and software interfaces. The engines were never going to be ignited during this test.
Thursday’s leak was discovered in the rocket’s ground structure while loading liquid hydrogen into the core stage. After halting these operations, technicians decided to chill the lines that carry liquid hydrogen into the upper stage to collect data. They weren’t going to load propellant into the upper stage.
