I always saw my grandmother as the confident, whip-smart head of the household who could do anything and everything. All the harder for my younger self, then, to comprehend that she was pulled out of school at five years old, never having learned how to read or write.

They are expected to prioritize domestic duties over schooling, forced into marriages at young ages, and face high rates of child labor further restricting their access to education. Gender-based violence, including sexual harassment and assault, is another common barrier to girls' education: The fear of violence within school premises or traveling to and from school can lead parents to keep their daughters at home.
