Seeing someone, especially a high-profile athlete or a person you respect, talk openly about anxiety or depression, for instance, decreases the stigma around mental health and provides a counter narrative, said"It normalizes the duality," Sumler said."You can be a fantastic athlete and competitor and be struggling."
Ohio State employs four full-time sports psychologists who are entirely focused on the mental health of the university's varsity athletes. Psychologists not only counsel athletes, but they also work with athletics staff and coaches to help support the entire team. Being embedded with the teams means players feel comfortable coming to Williams with their problems, she said, from a quick 15-minute conversation about feeling stressed to weekly counseling sessions.
Sumler said it's especially important that teams consider athletes within marginalized groups, like LGBTQ and Black athletes, and consider how to support their mental health needs.
