A friend of the teens testified that the defendants 'did it to be funny,' and said that one told the other there was no one below after she'd told them not to throw the log.

Justin ReutterRyan Shepler, right, gives a closing statement to Hocking County Juvenile Court Judge Jonah Saving Tuesday morning, Nov. 5, 2019, in Logan. Shepler was speaking on behalf of his client Jaden Churchheus. The 16-year-old is accused of murder of Victoria Schafer on Sept. 2 near Old Man's Cave in Hocking Hills State Park. Saving found probable cause to bound over Churchheus to the adult division of common pleas court for trial.

During Churchheus' hearing, a video was shown of his interview with investigators in which Churchheus repeatedly stated that he “flipped the log” over a downed tree and that Buckley pushed it. Jaden Churchheus, 16, holds a tissue after wiping his face with it Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, in the juvenile division of Hocking County Common Pleas Court in Logan. Judge Jonah Saving found probable cause to bound over Churchheus to the court's adult division for trial in the death of Victoria Schafer.Spencer initially testified that she did not remember who pushed the log off of the cliff during Churchheus' hearing in the morning.

“I have a hard time imagining what it must be like going through this as a 16-year-old,” said Shepler."Mr. Churchheus was in high school when this happened, and now he is facing the possibility of decades in prison." “I disagree with the court’s decision,” said Toy. “He’s a good judge I just disagree. There may be an appellate issue if anything bad happens but quite frankly, I think in any jury trial in an adult system, my client is going to be acquitted. No ifs, ands or buts."
