Officials say a fire at the Hoover Dam was isolated to the single area in an exceedingly rare case of a transformer catching on fire.

Officials say no one was injured when a transformer at Hoover Dam briefly caught fire Tuesday morning. , causing a fire that lasted about a half-hour and sending plumes of black smoke swirling through the air.
“We’ve got engineers and some of our senior leadership down there taking a look now, also with some inspectors to see exactly what happened,” HendrixWHAT IS HOOVER DAM? Hendrix told KTNV the power grid is not affected because the fire was contained to the site of one transformer of 17 total — and remained isolated until fire crews extinguished it.
“And then once the electricity gets to roughly where it’s going to be consumed, we use another set of transformers to reduce the voltage of the electricity," Kern said, “and then that electricity gets sent out over distribution lines that are insulated and run to people’s houses, businesses, etc.”Hoover Dam has 17 transformers — nine on its Nevada side and eight on its Arizona side. The fire was extinguished on the fifth Arizona transformer.
