MacArthur High grad Jesse Montagna's first stab at creating a show was inspired by a woman who said she was an alien changing into a new life form.
San Antonio native Jesse Montagna, center, wrote, produced, directed and starred in"Creed: The Musical." The jukebox musical premiered with a three-night run in New York in December.Growing up, Jesse Montagna's dad had two CDs in his truck: one by Boston and one by Creed.
Creed's music stayed with the MacArthur High School graduate -- so much so that he spent the last four months of last year writing, producing, directing and starring in"Creed: The Musical." He and his castmates produced a sold-out three-show run at Producers Club in Hell's Kitchen. "We were working Off-Off Broadway, in just the weirdest dungeons that New York City has to offer," Montagna said."We were fortunate enough to have a fine enough venue to make it work, but it was a run-and-gun style show. We had to be there at 6 to set things up and we’re out by 10."
The show is a jukebox musical about a father who lands in jail on the day his daughter is born. He then tries to find a way to break free so he can return to his family. It is laced with Creed's music, including"With Arms Wide Open,""One Last Breath" and"Higher."about it Feb. 14. The story followed the production's rehearsal process all the way through its brief run.
Montagna, an actor, writer and comedian who makes his living as a freelance audio engineer, is hoping that sort of attention will help him take the show higher. He'd like to expand it from a one-act to a 90-minute two-act show. And he'd like for it to advance into an Off-Broadway space, though there are more hoops to jump through to make that leap. He would need more financing, for one thing. And he would also need to get the blessing of the band.
