If Oculus founder Palmer Luckey wasn't running Anduril, he 'would be working on private prison reform or synthetic food made from petroleum products,' he declared on stage at the Under30Summit in Detroit on Monday

“I would be working on private prison reform or synthetic food made from petroleum products,” he declared on stage at Forbes’ Under 30 Summit in Detroit on Monday.

Luckey believes it could be possible to recreate a food’s texture and appearance with polymers derived from petroleum and that the final product would “be better than all this plant-based stuff,” from the likes of Impossible Burger or Beyond Meat . “I think that you could actually build food that has no calories, because obesity is a huge epidemic — you know, l am probably going to die of obesity,” he said. “I want to eat whatever I want and I don't want to be fat, and so the only way I could figure out how to do that was to make food out of petroleum products.”

Luckey says he did some experiments that seemed promising but he didn’t move forward with the idea because he thought it would be a “marketing nightmare.” He doesn’t think people are ready to eat things made from recycled petroleum-based products. Luckey also floated an idea for a nonprofit prison system.

“People get locked up in prisons, and there’s a huge profit motive to keep them in prison as long as possible and once they get out of prison for them to come back as quickly as possible,” he said. “So the private prison companies have an incentive to not solve the problem that they uniquely have the ability to solve.”
