Heidi Sand recognized as 'a fearless, brave and tenacious woman'
Gold Medal winning Special Olympian Heidi Sand was sworn in as an honorary police officer on Tuesday.
She grew up in Oceanside and has lived there more than 30 years. She joined Special Olympics when she was 12, and has participated in basketball, bowling, floor hockey, golf, athletics, softball and tennis. “The relationships that have developed with our athletes from those events are cherished,” said Jennifer Atenza, public information officer for the Oceanside Police Department. “It is a huge privilege for department members to celebrate these amazing athletes who rise above obstacles to compete. Heidi is a fearless, brave and tenacious woman who inspires us.”
After Sand was sworn in by Oceanside police Chief Kedrick Sadler, she hopped in a patrol car, and went into the field with Detective Chris James and Atenza.
