The panel moved forward to reopen the process to work on addressing concerns about the proposed new districts in order to address concerns brought by New Yorkers.
Once every decade, the district maps are processed to attempt to reflect population changes revealed in the 2020 census. The new district lines are responsible for redistributing the city’s population evenly but additionally cannot dilute the voting power of racial and language minority communities, per the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Districting Member Marc Wurzel, who also serves as General Counsel and Assistant Secretary of Grand Central Partnership, expressed some concerns during the meeting regarding some controversy regarding new proposed redistricting which some community members – particular in communities of color – who argued that the initial redistricting was detrimental to their communities since it separated many of them into different districts.
The NYC Districting Commission is comprised of 15 individuals either appointed by NYC Mayor Eric Adams, the council’s Republican minority or the Democrat majority and is responsible for completing and updating City Council Districts which accurately and equitably reflect any population changes in addition to ensuring that fair, effective and equitable representation of minority groups is respected.
This most recent meeting follows some controversy and potential disagreements with the Districting Commission and NYC residents who said that the originally proposed redistricting maps were separating marginalized communities., some Queens residents felt that they had been historically underserved by the government and that many found a continued culture of division.
