We want to ensure that future generations of Canadians continue to enjoy the capital of Canada as a winter city.

long-term climate vulnerability and risk assessment

We’ve already started this important work. After the floods in 2017 and 2019, we rebuilt damaged pathways to be flood-resilient, rehabilitated shorelines to mitigate erosion, and upgraded important flood prevention infrastructure. With warmer temperatures in store, we are mapping heat islands, increasing our forest cover and ensuring public spaces have protection from the elements.

In the meantime, we’re taking stock of what we learned during this disappointing Rideau Canal Skateway season. Thanks to a unique partnership, we’re identifying ways to adapt our skateway operations to warmer and shorter winters through data monitoring, pilot projects and infrastructure changes. We are looking at how to catalyze ice information and using different and lighter snow-clearing methods to allow us to get on the ice sooner in the season.
