Nurses in Chicago held a rally calling for better staffing at hospitals hit hard by the COVID omicron variant.

Members of National Nurses United, one of the largest unions of registered nurses in the country, is organizing the rallies, including one in the medical district near the old Cook County Hospital.

The union says they conducted a survey of thousands of registered nurses across the country from October to December of last year and over 82 percent said at least half of their shifts were unsafely staffed.Falguni Dave, a Stroger Hospital medical ICU nurse, said it is an ongoing problem. She said she hopes Governor JB Pritzker's efforts will help as he is planning to send more than 2,000 healthcare workers to help staff Illinois hospitals. In several counties, very few ICU beds remain.
