As political unrest and instability increased worldwide, so did the number of journalists killed while reporting the news, a report shows.
The toll was the highest recorded since 2018, CPJ said, and was largely concentrated in Haiti, Mexico and Ukraine, which have been ravaged by political instability, organized crime violence, and war. Fifteen journalists were killed mostly during the early stages of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, CPJ said.
Of those, 13, including American Time Magazine journalist Brent Renaud, were killed while on assignment. Thirteen journalists were killed in Mexico in 2022, the highest-ever in the Latin American country. Motives for the remaining 10 deaths are still under investigation, “but in a country characterized by violence and impunity, it is notoriously difficult to confirm whether journalists were killed because of their work,” CPJ said.Mexico accounted for nearly half the deaths.
